You’re Engaged! These are your 6 Next Steps

Congratulations! You have a glittery new ring on your finger and a permanent smile on your face. You gaze at your ring as it catches the light and start dreaming of your new life with your partner.  Your head is full of details and to-dos, and to help you our we’ve selected the six things you need to do next after you get engaged.

1. Tell your friends and family

Some news in life is worth sharing in person (or on the phone). Tell your friends and family and delight in the fun of sharing such special news. Once the most important people have been notified, go ahead and change your Facebook status!

2. Take care of your hand(s).

Chances are you’ve just received one of the more expensive pieces of jewelry you’ve ever owned. Make sure you protect yourself and your fiancé by getting it insured, so you don’t have to worry about accidently damaging your rock or –heavens forbid- the loss of the ring. While you’re at it, book yourself a manicure.  Your hands will be receiving extra attention in the days ahead. After you tell someone you’re engaged, the very next question will be, “can I see the ring?”.

3. Start Dreaming (& Pinning)

If you haven’t already done so, join Pinterest and create a wedding board (or two). Let yourself go wild and pin to your hearts content, adding wedding items that speak to you.  Note what seasons, colors, dresses and trends you like the most as you pin. Some Brides like purchasing a wedding-specific planning book or journal, and we even know a few Brides that created wedding spreadsheets!

4. Establish a Budget and Timeline

If you and your partner can decide on a date for the big day, great! If you’re still discussing, try to aim for establishing a timeline with a year and a season. You might not know the exact date your venue of choice has open just yet, but you might know you’re getting married in the fall of next year.  From this date or season work backwards and create an approximate timeline for wedding planning. While you’re at it, begin to create a budget. Consider a maximum price along with the approximate distribution of funds (think: dress, food/ drink, venue, décor) as it will help you greatly make decisions in the days and weeks ahead.

5. Pick your Wedding Party

I can’t say “I Do” without you, you and you… Go ahead and select your wedding party and ask them if they will stand up for you. Some Brides enjoy making a gift and presenting it to their wedding party members, some prefer a casual ask. Whatever you style is, have your ladies and gentlemen selected so they can understand the wedding timeline and commitment.

6. Book a Consultation for Gown Shopping

Arguably one of the most fun parts of becoming engaged is Wedding Dress shopping! We recommend you book a consultation in advance and select whom you’d like to come with you. Prepare for the consultation by looking at a few gowns online, and understanding what you might like to try. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of a mermaid style dress, or maybe you’re more of a colored gown person. Being able to articulate to a Bridal Consultant key elements of your daily style and some of the wedding details will allow them to help guide you in selecting your dream dress.

You’re engaged, congratulations! Enjoy the journey and good luck on the path to your wedding.
